In an exciting novelty for participants of this year’s Mt. Wycheproof Mother’s Day Classic, runners will have the opportunity to test their speed against heritage diesel locomotive, The Grainlander.
The 707 Operations passenger train will depart Wycheproof for Nullawil at approximately 9 a.m., as part of the Silo Art tour from Melbourne to Sea Lake.
Organisers of the MDC have reversed the direction of the event course to allow runners and walkers to “race” the train along Broadway.
“Wycheproof is unique in that it is one of the only places in Victoria with an operational train line down the middle of the main street,” Wycheproof Community Resource Centre’s Averyll Loft said.
“We couldn’t pass up the opportunity to work in with the 707 team – its departure time and the race start are at 9 a.m..
“Those who are up for the challenge can race the train right along Broadway until they reach Charles Street and start their lap of the mount.”
The Mother’s Day Classic is an annual event raising vital funds and awareness for breast cancer research and the Wycheproof Cancer Support Group, and has become tradition for families across the Buloke Shire.

On-the-day registrations close at 8.45 a.m. in time for a welcome and warm up before the start of the race at 9 a.m..
Participants who would like to receive a race pack as part of their registration including a medallion, head scarf and access to the MDC online portal, can jump online at www.mothersdayclassic.com.au/vic-wycheproof
A reduced registration fee will be available on the day, but will not include a race pack.
This is the sixth year the Mother’s Day Classic has been held in Wycheproof, and residents of surrounding towns are most welcome to join in the fun.
