It’s a photograph that holds pride of place in both the Elders building off Broadway, Wycheproof, and the Donald office of the “Buloke Times”.

Ankle deep in mud, and sporting heavy waterproof workwear, members of Elders staff were flat out taking bids for sheep at their local sale yards.

At the front of the selling team are Kevin Thompson (left, auctioneer), Jim Coffey, Ian “Ossie” Dixon (partly obscured), Graham Locke and Justin Kelly. Several other Elders representatives are also in the photo.

They were offering a pen of 220 1½-year-old first Border Leicester-Merino cross ewes, at Wycheproof’s special sheep sale, on Friday, October 31, 1997.

That was at a time when the newly-formed Buloke Shire was rejoicing in a drought-breaking rain.

Subsequently, this magnificent photograph won for “Buloke Times” journalist Shane O’Shea the Victorian Country Press Association’s Printing Technology Award for the Best News Photograph of 1997-’98.

Fast forward almost 24 years, and Wycheproof auctioneer, Kevin Thompson, is celebrating 50 years with the Elders organisation. To mark this occasion, the latest edition of “Stock and Land” has featured an interview with Kevin, one of Victoria’s best-known and most highly-regarded auctioneers.

The “Buloke Times” appreciated permission from “Stock and Land” to reprint the story, An Auctioneer for Every Season.
