Artwork Attracts Visitors to Donald
A passing moment of curiosity turned into an unplanned afternoon of discovery for Melbourne couple Paul and Karen from Roxburgh Park, who found themselves on an impromptu tour of Donald on Sunday, May 17.
While travelling through, the pair noticed the striking mural painted on the side of the local newsagency building. What might have been a brief glance from the road became something more, compelling them to pull over and take a closer look.
Their appreciation for the artwork did not go unnoticed. Local resident Margie Hollis, who had spotted them admiring the mural from a nearby coffee shop, decided to introduce herself. In conversation, she discovered just how captivated they were by what they had seen. Far from simply pausing for a photo, Paul and Karen chose to extend their stay in town for a further two hours.
During that time, they wandered through Donald, taking in more of the town’s creative displays and points of interest. The mural sparked a wider exploration, leading them to view other artworks and landmarks.
Their visit also included a stop at the Bullock’s Head lookout, along with a few of the local shops that were open at the time. What began as a roadside pause became relaxing time spent experiencing the character of the town at a slower pace.
For many small towns like Donald, public art has become more than decoration – it serves as an invitation – to slow down, look a little closer, and discover what might otherwise be passed by.
