A Small Cuppa Can Make a Big Difference
The value of a simple cuppa, good food and friendly conversation was on display in Birchip on Friday, when local St Vincent de Paul members joined with the Birchip Neighbourhood House to provide a friendly space for people to come together.
Christine Richmond, Carol Reid and Helen Barclay, all members of the Birchip Conference of St Vincent de Paul catered for two waves of guests throughout the day with the first group enjoying a relaxed morning tea and a second group gathering over lunchtime.
Guests enjoyed an array of sandwiches featuring homemade traditional fillings prepared by St Vincent de Paul members, cuppas served in antique china and a selection of homemade slices and cakes, but most of all they enjoyed having a chat.
For some, attending a community gathering is simply an enjoyable social occasion, while for others it can provide an important link to local organisations and an opportunity to meet new people in the community.
The event was purposefully hosted during Loneliness Awareness Week, highlighting the important role local neighbourhood houses and community organisations can play in helping people feel connected and included.
The event also gave the local St Vincent de Paul Conference an opportunity to raise funds for its annual Winter Appeal. President Christine Richmond said: “The conference is very grateful for the generous donations we have received over the past week, it will help us to provide for those people in our region who need a bit of extra support during this arduous winter period.”
Donations are still welcome and can be made using the QR code published in last week’s “Buloke Times” or available through the Birchip Page on Facebook.
Events such as Friday’s gathering demonstrate how local organisations working together can create a welcoming space where people can enjoy each other’s company, have a cuppa and a chat, reconnect with familiar faces and meet people who may be new to town.
