Birchip-Watchem reserves have produced their most complete performance of the season, overpowering Boort by 67 points at Boort Park on Saturday.

With both sides entering the clash holding 1-2 records, the contest loomed as an important early-season opportunity to gain momentum. It was the Bulls who seized the initiative from the outset, controlling the game with superior run, cleaner ball movement and relentless pressure around the contest.

Birchip-Watchem made a strong start, kicking 4.5 in the opening term to establish a 17-point lead at quarter-time. The Bulls looked dangerous whenever they moved the ball forward, with Riley Doran presenting strongly inside 50 and Tison Wiantara providing energy and creativity around the ground. In contrast, Boort struggled to generate consistent attacking opportunities, managing just two goals for the term.

The second quarter was more evenly contested, with the Magpies lifting their intensity around stoppages through experienced midfielder Nathan McNally and young on-baller Brodie McPherson, who was backing up after earlier playing in the under-17s. However, Birchip-Watchem continued to look the more polished side going forward and gradually extended its lead to 19 points by halftime.

The match was effectively decided in the third quarter as the Bulls broke the game open with a dominant display. Their midfield gained ascendancy, led brilliantly by Max Nield, who was clearly best afield with a superb all-round performance. Nield amassed 30 possessions, used the ball cleanly throughout the afternoon and capped off his game with a goal. His speed and composure repeatedly drove the Bulls forward and left the Boort defence under constant pressure.

Connor Boyle again provided strong outside run on the wing, continuing his excellent season, while ruckman Joshua Woods gave his midfielders first use at stoppages. Wiantara electrified the crowd with one of the highlights of the afternoon, taking off down the wing and bouncing the ball around eight times in a thrilling run that showcased both his pace and confidence.

The Bulls piled on four goals in the third term while restricting Boort to just a single behind, stretching the margin to 47 points at the final break. From there, Birchip-Watchem comfortably finished the job in the last quarter, adding another three goals to run out the emphatic 12.17 (89) to 3.4 (22) winner.

The convincing victory lifts Birchip-Watchem to an even ledger after four rounds and gives the Bulls confidence heading into the next stage of the season, while Boort will look to regroup after a difficult afternoon on its home ground.
