The Last of Summer’s Bounty
Clockwise from 12 o’clock – a selection of rockmelons, passionfruit, tomatoes, snow peas, spring onions and zucchinis with green tomatoes and cabbage taking centre stage.

The Red Gate Community gardeners have harvested a bounteous summer crop, as pictured.

The giant Russian Sunflowers have been felled and seeds for anyone wishing to replicate the 4 metre high success story are free. Collect them any Tuesday morning from 9 a.m..

Community gardeners are now in the process of raising seeds for the winter crops and invite anyone interested to join the volunteer activities to watch and learn how to go about gardening in this particular climate (a climate which offers up almost daily challenges).

Red Gate gardening is as much a social activity as it is a horticultural learning adventure. The volunteers don’t claim to be professionals, but what they do have is years of experience and in that time, have learnt what grows well here and how best to grow it.

After tending to the garden beds, Red Gate gardeners are treated to a well-earned morning tea talk-fest, after which the fruits, vegetables and flowers of their toils are shared. Any surplus is donated to worthy causes.

Above all, it’s a community pastime and an open invitation is extended to come along and join in, especially those new to the town. Again, any Tuesday morning from 9 a.m. at the Red Gate in McCulloch St (behind the Bendigo Bank building).
