Following a drizzly start to the day, the U14 “A” team took to the court in Charlton as the sky cleared.
The Bulls started strongly with accurate shooting from Aneika Boyle and Asha Lee. The defence end of Alana Caldwell and Esther Bourke worked well together to clear the ball out from the Charlton shooters with only a few goals getting through. The mid court created movement through the court capitalising on turnovers created by the slippery ball. The scoreboard did not reflect the tight competition played out on court with the Charlton Navies creating effective passages of play. The second half saw the Bullettes make some changes across the court and run away with the game.
Well done to both teams! Birchip-Watchem Award winners Aneika Boyle and Macada Russell.

The Bulls didn’t take long to stamp their authority on the game, with goalers Zali Angel and Beau Haslam on point early. An injury to GA Beau Haslam saw the Bulls reshuffle their attack but Imogen Boyle got straight to work on keeping the flow happening into attack.
Despite strong drives from Elise Fitzpatrick through the middle, the Bulls created multiple turnovers going to the first break holding the Navies scoreless and with a 13 goal lead.
The second quarter saw the Bulls continue to put on a clinical performance, looking to extend their lead. Supported by the Bulls’ defenders relentless pressure, the Navies struggled to penetrate their attack and find their zone at the post. Half time scores Bulls 21 to Navies 0.
The Bulls made some changes for the third quarter and strong defence from the Navies’ Isobel Soulsby and Annie Olive started to result in more flow into attack. The Navies starting to make some impact on the scoreboard with Tayla Giles finding the net a number of times. The never-give-up attitude of the Navies was present the whole game and the scoreline did not reflect the fight they put up. The Bulls, however, had set the tone of their match early, and continued into the final term with a dominant performance running out victors 39-9. Bulls award winners were Zali Angel and Sassia Coffey, with this round’s awards sponsored by Mick Foott livestock and grain cartage.
“C” Grade
The Bulls started the game strong with great defensive pressure and accurate goaling from Chloe Gleeson to take the lead at quarter time 12 to 5.
With Birchip-Watchem’s Centre Sammi Mitchell running hard all game always was an option and with some great feeds into the shooters, the Bulls extended their lead at half time 27 to 8.
A stronger quarter from Charlton in the third kept the Bulls’ defenders on their toes as Jac Leslie and Abby Mulquinny were combining well in the goal ring. At the last change Birchip-Watchem 39 led Charlton 16.
The Bulls kept charging into the last quarter with defenders Ellie Kenna and Holly Hinkley winning plenty of the ball in the mid court for the attacking end to convert into goals. Final score Birchip-Watchem 54 to Charlton 17. Best players: Sammi Mitchell and Chloe Gleeson.
“B” Grade
The Bulls applied intensity from the start of the game with Gemma Ryan providing speed through the centre, resulting in many tips and intercepts. Madelyn Sinclair and Brooke Laney teamed up well together, shooting a combined 16 goals in both the first and second quarters.
The defensive end created many turnovers and took a heap of rebounds with the combination of the experienced Meghan Noonan, Stacey Hamilton and the youth, speed and determination of Eva Coffey being effective. This kept the Navies to 4 goals in both the first and second quarter and at half time Birchip-Watchem 32 led Charlton 8.
The Bulls brought on Zali Angel in the third quarter (into GS), along with Tylah Haslam (into WA) who played well in her first game of “B” grade. Zali’s strength and height under the ring proved advantageous for the Bulls and Liz Riley in GK for the Navies had to work hard to take advantage of available opportunities to intercept when the ball wasn’t fed in well to the ring. Three quarter time score: Birchip-Watchem 47 to Charlton 12.
The Bulls kept the pressure up during the final quarter and despite Charlton’s Lily Campbell in the centre providing strength and drive through the midcourt, it wasn’t enough for the Navies to pull back the margin.
Final scores: Birchip-Watchem 60 defeated Charlton 15. Awards: Zali Angel, Brooke Laney (thanks to Mick Foott Livestock and Grain Cartage for sponsoring all awards this week).
“A” Grade
The start of the game saw good competition between Charlton and Birchip-Watchem. The Bulls came out strong with Gemma Ryan taking many intercepts in the mid court giving the Bulls a chance to get a lead. With the Bulls converting all their scoring opportunities there wasn’t much Charlton could do to stem the flow as Sassia Coffey and Cheyenne Parsons worked well together shutting down the Charlton shooting duo of Chloe Walsh and Kiara Perry. After the first quarter the scores were Bulls 15 to Charlton 7.
In the second quarter the Bulls maintained their lead, continuing to convert goals and get many intercepts in the mid court. Demi Foott made many intercepts and moved the ball into the goal third helping the Bulls to gain a further lead. The scores at half time were Bulls 27 to Charlton 14.
In the last half of the game the Bulls made no changes, keeping everything the same and allowing them to settle into the game well. This was evident with the final scores of 52 for Birchip -Watchem and 39 Charlton. Award winners sponsored by Mick Foott Livestock and Grain Cartage were Demi Foott and Sassia Coffey.
