It is Basketball not Netball!
(By Nancy Trewin, Narraport)
Back in 1952, Narraport won Tyrrell’s “A” grade basketball premiership. The successful team is pictured, with a very young looking Nancy Allan standing second from right in the back row.
Nancy continues:
“Our basketball club was organised by two amazing ladies, Mrs Roy Lee (coach) and Mrs Jack Sheahan (who had no daughters but sat in all elements of weather, scoring or time keeping).
“Our first court was on the side of the road, parallel to our (Narraport) football ground.
“Mr Phil Allan was a “die hard” supporter of the basketball club, keeping the court in top order and providing home-grown oranges for half-time.
“The shed was named Narraport Green Mill (soldiers named it after an entertainment bar overseas, during World War II).
“We played all teams, ranging from Sea Lake, back to Birchip.
“One day we played at Curyo (believe me, Curyo had top basketballers) in complete mud — no showers and so on — we just washed down under a tap.”
Highlights and Lowlights
Basketball players had to work in the kiosk (old shed). One day money was missing, later found safely in another jar.
Footballers and basketballers travelled to away matches in Kenneth Matheson’s truck, sitting on wooden stools.
Narraport’s “A” and “B” grade teams won a premiership or two, whilst in the Tyrrell League.
