Calder United overcame an early challenge from Boort to record a 25-point victory over the Magpies on Saturday afternoon.
Despite a slow start that saw the Lions trail by eight points at quarter time, Calder responded strongly in the second term to establish a 19-point lead.
The Lions maintained control for the remainder of the match, strengthening their position inside the top four on the ladder. The final scores showed Boort finishing with 6.8 (44) while Calder United recorded 10.9 (69).
Boort came out firing in the opening quarter, gaining an early eight-point advantage and setting the tone for the contest. However, once the second quarter began, Calder lifted its intensity and fought back impressively to take a 19-point lead into the main break. From there, the Lions remained on top and eventually ran out comfortable winners.
Several Calder players produced outstanding performances. Captain Oscar Madden led from the backline, putting together a strong defensive display that kept Boort’s scoring opportunities to a minimum. Dale Pearce was influential in attack, finishing with four goals, while ever-reliable Boe Bish impressed again to claim third-best on ground honours, proving he still has plenty to offer at senior level. There was also a memorable debut for Ollie Daykin, who marked the occasion by kicking his first senior goal.
Boort also had several standout performers despite the loss. Carlos Egan enjoyed an excellent game in the forward line, kicking two goals, while Keiren Wilson was recognised as Boort’s second-best player on the day. Liam Bianco also contributed strongly up forward and added a goal to his efforts.
The victory was an important one for the Lions, who remain in third place on the ladder. Calder now holds a six-point advantage over Birchip-Watchem, but sits 12 points behind second-placed Sea Lake-Nandaly. If the Lions are to push for a top-two finish, they will need a strong finish to the season.
Regardless, Calder United appears well placed to make an impact in the finals series. Looking ahead to Round 11, the Lions will take on St Arnaud in what promises to be an exciting contest.
