“A” grade men left to right Kirk Boyle, Brett Schofield, Ric Walklate,Troy Heenan, Wayne Southwell and Matt McGurk ready for the first round of the Charlton golf championship.

On Saturday the Charlton men played the first round of their annual championships; 22 men teed off in the 3 grades and a further 4 played 12 holes.

Scoring was tight in all grades, with no obvious run-away potential champions. Conditions were perfect, and thanks goes to Anthony Hargreaves, as greens director, for the endless hours he spends at the course, and also to John Headon for all the time he has spent mowing since his retirement.

In “A” grade, both Kirk Boyle and Brett Schofield carded 85, with defending champion Matt McGurk only one shot back with an 86. The other 3 competitors in “A” grade were only another couple of hits further back.

“B” grade was a similar story, with the first 4 players having only 3 hits between them.

Handicapper Clinton Olive is leading with an 88. This naturally created discussion about whether he was correctly handicapped to be a “B” grade contender. One shot further back is the club’s illustrious president, the Marmel muscle, Anthony Hargreaves. Then just another hit behind are two contenders (with a combined experience of over 80 years of golf, what could possibly go wrong?), namely Jeff McLoughlan and Trevor McGurk.

In “C” grade, the Terrapee terrorist, Peter Sexton, with a great 98 off the stick, has shot to an early lead. However, “new to golf”, Paul Sanderson, is posing a real threat with his long power drives and his ever improving ability to recover from 50 meters in the rough, to be only 5 shots behind.
John Harley is a further 2 strokes back, and was overheard saying that he has more success getting grants for the new 2020 sports centre, than sinking putts.

This coming Saturday will be the second round, with names in by 12 noon, for a 12.15 hit off. Please contact Captain Trevor if you will be late or unable to play.

For the daily ball run, 2 grades were contested. In division 1, Clint Olive 88-15, 73, won 3 balls on a countback from Anthony Hargreaves 89-16, 73, who won 2 balls. Those winning one ball were treasurer Wayne Southwell 87-18, 74, and the McGurk men, Trevor with 90-14, 74 and Matt 86-11, 75.
In division 2, Peter Sexton 98-28-70 won 3 balls. Jeff McLoughlan 90-17, 73 won 2 balls and Brendan Byrne 95-18, 75, Damien McIntyre 95-19-76 and Ian Jenkins 97-19, 78 each won one ball. John Harley was the nearest to the pin on the 7th.
