Dragon Delight for Holiday Viewing

Opening the school holiday viewing, the Rex is presenting the family-friendly movie, “Dragon Rider” (PG 92 minutes).

Based on the best-selling children’s book by German author, Cornelia Funke, “Dragon Rider” is voiced by an A list of British actors including Freddie Highmore (The Good Doctor), Patrick Stewart (Star Trek/X-Men), and Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Love Actually).

The story concerns a young silver dragon, an orphaned boy, and a mountain spirit who team up together as they make their way through the Himalayas in the hunt for the Rim of Heaven.

Unfortunately for silver dragon Firedrake, the land where he and his fellow dragons reside is under threat, so he decides to try to find the mythical Rim Of Heaven that could be a new safe haven for the dragons. With the help of furry brownie Sorrel, and an orphaned teen named Ben (who Firedrake mistakenly believes is a dragon rider), he sets off across the skies, unaware that they are being hunted by Nettlebrand, a metal monster whose aim is to destroy every dragon left on earth.

Capturing the fun and adventure of the book, with colourful visuals and a nail-biting chase towards the end, “Dragon Rider” is a briskly paced, enjoyable animated adventure that should charm those looking for a fantasy outlet.

The 90 minute plus viewing time should keep young patrons engaged.

“Dragon Rider” screens:  Saturday, April 3, at 8 p.m.; Sunday, April 4, at 2 p.m.; Tuesday, April 6, at 8 p.m..
