Catch Up With “Cruella”

Meet “Cruella” as a young woman in Disney’s movie of the same name as the backstory of the original “Cruella de Vil” — villain from “One Hundred and One Dalmations” — takes to the big screen at the Rex this weekend.

The live-action tale, starring Emma Stone in the title role, and British actor, Emma Thompson, as the haute-couture fashionista “The Baroness”, tells how sweet little fashion designer, Estella ended up unleashing her dark side to become “Cruella” — seeking fame and revenge for past injustices.

Set in the 1970s, the movie’s fashion and the music are sensational bonuses in a story which holds plenty of twists and turns. Review after review praises the over-the-top outfits which have coined the film the sub-title of “De-Vil wears Prada”! Coupled with the hits from the ’70s, the mix has brought a fresh take to the background of the “Cruella” story, which originally was about capturing the dalmatians to use their skins to make fur coats.

The running time of 134 minutes shouldn’t be seen as a deterrent, with reviewers saying they were fully invested from “go-to-whoa”.  With a perfect blend of visuals, brilliant story and top notch acting, this is entertainment sure to captivate and intrigue viewers of all ages.

A spot-on movie for school holiday entertainment – keep an eye open for “Wink”, the gorgeous little chihuahua!

“Cruella” (PG  134 mins) screens:  Saturday, July 10, 8 p.m., Sunday, July 11, Tuesday, July 13, at 8 p.m..
