North Central Football, Netball and Hockey Leagues united together during round 9 on June 15 to show their support to all families in our local communities impacted by cancer, currently or in the past, be it themselves or loved ones, however Birchip -Watchem had the bye.

In lieu of Birchip- Watchem having the bye for Maddi’s Round, the Birchip-Watchem Netball club decided to host a ladies’ day on Saturday 20 July in the viewing room of the Birchip Community Leisure Centre, when Birchip-Watchem hosted Charlton at home, in recognition of Maddi Fitzpatrick who was an integral member of the Charlton Netball Club and the wider North Central netball community.

During Maddi’s gallant battle against cancer she was a patient of Peter Mac, which was the recipients of the funds raised from Maddi’s Round and Birchip-Watchem Ladies Day.

Georgia Lee co-ordinated the event and players and supporters enthusiastically donated a range of delectable sandwiches, slices and cakes for a High Tea and a plethora of items for a raffle that ended up with five prizes won by Jacinta Connelly, Jo Lee, Stacey Hamilton, Kristie Dean, Lauren Campbell and Andrew Lee (who donated his first prize back, only to be drawn out again).

Fittingly for Birchip- Watchem’s Ladies Day, Maddi’s Round in acknowledgment of Maddi’s favourite colours, was themed green and purple, which were the colours of the decorations and flowers adorning the viewing room.

The High Tea spread, accompanied by a variety of teas served in china cups and a cocktail bar was enjoyed by the attendees throughout the afternoon as they watched the netball and the football, culminating in an exciting “A” grade game.

The children were entertained with fairy floss, face painting and creatively decorated green and purple Sam Kemp cupcakes provided by the Birchip Neighbourhood House LDAT program and the junior netball players.

Maddi's legacy has left an indelible mark on the netball fraternity and the wider Buloke community and the message that was shared during Maddi’s round was “NO ONE FIGHTS ALONE” which is epitomised in the North Central, where on the court and other sporting fields we are adversaries, but off it, we all work together for the greater good.

Together we can also help make a difference to people living with cancer!

Up until Saturday, Maddi’s round had raised $7424 for Peter Mac to support its discovery of cancer cures and now with Saturday’s event which made over $3,000 profit, the tally will be well over $10,000 which is an amazing contribution from the North Central.
