Memorable Moments in Local Sport: Wycheproof Netball

Wycheproof-Narraport’s Rhonda Allan (nee Trewin) has contributed a couple of her fondest memories of time playing on the netball court, but faces a tough challenge, following in the footsteps of her mother, Nancy, whose recent contribution delighted many “Times” readers.

Turning the spotlight on a close friend and former team-mate, Rhonda writes as follows:

“Many years ago, when I was playing in the “centre”  netball for Wycheproof-Narraport (not sure against who, may have been St. Arnaud), and delivered the ball into goal shooter, Bernie (Bernadine) McNicol, who, as she caught the ball, lost her navy pleated skirt (that’s how long ago it was).

The skirt fell to the ground, and because she had possession of the ball, Bernie had to release it with no skirt on.

Bernie shot the goal and then quickly retrieved her skirt and managed to get herself right again before the next whistle.

It was very difficult for me to remain focussed on the remainder of the game, as I couldn’t stop laughing . . . or the rest of the team for that matter.

I think Bernie was pleased when the new lycra once-piece uniform was introduced, to save any more embarrassment”.

Netball Should Always Be Fun
Again, many years ago, after a “slump” in results during the year for the “A” grade, when we only managed a couple of wins, Wycheproof-Narraport played against Boort in the final home-and-away match, at Wyche..

We decided to distract our opposition by wearing weird hair-dos, with lots of “gorgeous” styles complemented by pretty bows and ribbons (all within uniform rules, of course).

Just to top it off, we all threw out bibs in the centre and grabbed whatever we could, and played “out of position” for the game.

Well, these tactics distractions back-fired, as we lost badly, but thoroughly enjoyed the game.

After we finished, we grabbed our fully stocked eskys, nibbles and dips and sat on the court to enjoy some end-of-game refreshments.

The Boort girls thought this was hilarious, and couldn’t get over how well we took our loss.

One of them was heard to say: “Well, if this is how you respond after a bad loss, I can’t imagine what you lot would do if you won”.

The answer is easy!
