Until this season, Wycheproof-Narraport footballers were known as the Demons, while those from Nullawil were the Maroons.
As with many other country clubs, dwindling numbers of available players had eventually convinced them that amalgamation would be their best pathway to continued competitiveness.
The wisdom of that decision could hardly have been more dynamically illustrated than on Saturday at Wedderburn, when the two merged clubs, with the new title, “Calder United Lions”, became the toast of the football world with victories in both senior and reserves grand finals, against the worthiest of opposition from the Birchip-Watchem Bulls.
